There is a need for current, formal recommendations in the interventional radiology (IR) literature concerning the appropriate use of prophylactic antibiotics for IR procedures. This is particularly important given the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance and complications from nosocomial infection. This document summarizes the findings from the available surgical and IR literature on this topic. Anticipated pathogens and corresponding antibiotic coverage (dose and duration) are enumerated for common vascular and nonvascular interventions in adults.
