Gallbladder wall thickening is a common yet nonspecific finding that can occur in a wide range of gallbladder diseases and extracholecystic conditions. Distinguishing among the wide variety of conditions associated with gallbladder wall thickening is important for diagnosis and directing appropriate management. An initial critical diagnostic observation is whether the general pattern of thickening is focal or diffuse. Ancillary findings may be useful in further characterizing the cause of wall thickening.
