I agree with John that "prospect engagement, customer experience, collaboration and fusion" are the basic building blocks of marketing, and remain as important as ever. However, social media provides new and more effective tools for all of these purposes, so yes, a social media strategy is indeed essential.

Regarding the sentence "my hunch is that it happens more rarely than the authors would care to admit," we agree--but with a somewhat different spin, of course. Corporate entrepreneurship is tough. If it were easy, everyone would do it, and there would be no money in it. It's a true differentiator and path to sustainable growth that we've observed at many companies, with more attempting it all the time.

Thanks for your comments Maria and for the link to the NYT article on WM's health care policies. If the RFID initiative is an indication on how effective the retailer is in the implementation of its mandates, we may not see short-term tangible results.On-balance, however, it could be that the effect of WM creating policy and issuing mandates on critical issues and technologies may be enough to help push them in the right direction.

Wal*Mart made a similar, very public, endorsement of mandatory health care coverage by employers on June 30th. Broad mandates like this are an exciting way to kick start change, as well as to raise awareness on the issue... but I look forward to reading about how these initiatives will actually play out for workers and vendors. As all of you hardened warriors know, the devil is in the details on implementation. Here's a link to the NY Times article on Wal*Mart and health care: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/01/health/policy/01health.html

Thanks Ted, for your comment. I agree. I believe that Wal-Mart has learned the lesson of being proactive and getting ahead of issues like this one. Beyond sustainability, there are other issues that would benefit from having a Wal-Mart-sized champion. I am thinking of "Fair Trade" (fair wages) or child labor.Notwithstanding the above, sustainable packaging options for certain packaging types are few and the burden on small businesses will be significant.I believe that what we will see is a slower-than-expected rollout of the program and an option for small companies to acquire credits to offset their carbon footprint.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ted. We agree. WM can use the green issue to its advantage. I'm wondering how this will impact manufacturers and how they react to it.

Clearly, Walmart wants very much to get out in front of this issue in order to shape the debate and have a significant impact on the standards and standardization that emerges.

It is not easy to be juggling a thousand tasks at one time and still have the serenity necessary to fully concentrate on something. While I believe there is some truth in was Berglas says, I also believe that entrepreneurs have to become adept at what Malcolm Gladwell calls "Thin Slicing," the practice of grasping the essence of things in a very short amount of time. Have you read his book "Blink?" A good read.
